(meteorobs) A Perfect Evening.
Well, with a beautiful balmy 70F evening, light Kona breeze and
perfectly clear skies, what excuse could a meteor observer come up with
to stay indoors? Zilch.
My reward - a pretty good mix of meteors. While the sporadics (4) were
still #1, the southern radiants DVE/CAN came in a surprising second,
beating out the anthelion radiants. It was an even split between DCA and
Virginids, at one each. A mag 2 CAN was the highlight of the session. It
was a slow 15° path meteor in the northern sky, near polaris. It took
some effort to trace its trajectory back over 130° of sky to the radiant
in the SE!
Another surprise, I actually saw the Gegenschein from my backyard with
LM=6.2! I didnt think I could see it under such conditions, but there it
was - a 4x6° glob just SE of the Beehive.
So, the lesson to learn is - just go out and observe! You will always be
surprised and amazed what the heavens will show you.
Mike.
