(meteorobs) Observations Feb 05/06 - Xi Bootids strong.

I decided to go up to the 6800' level of Haleakala for my "Xi Bootid
peak" night. Little nippy up there, even in my ski parka, but the LM was
awesome! Turned out to be a good decision, because of the 47 meteors in
3 hr Teff, none were brighter than mag 2. There was a steady show of
moderate faint ones, SPO mostly. The Xi Bootids were the best non-SPO,
by far. 14 XBO in 3hr, making the rate more than double of the prior
night. Interestingly, my perception of their mean radiant was centered
around 14:40 +15°, somwewhat E of the predicted 14:05 +12°. But, I see
other observers also reporting a variation in this radiant center (?).

Overall, a pretty uninspiring session, but useful data, I hope. The sky
was excellent. The best part was just enjoying the unobstructed LM=6.7!
The Gegenschein was easily visible by direct vision, and the Zodiacal
Band was visible in its entirety E of the milky way, joining the
Gegenschein to the morning Zodiacal Light, even though averted vision
was required to see it in its faintest area, nearer the Gegenschein. The
ZL is really a nuisance, had to avoid that area later in the session so
that my LM would not be deteriorated.

Mike.
