Re: (meteorobs) How does the lunar meteor strike flash come about?

Robert Heinlein's fictional book called 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'
explains this phenomena rather nicely. It is nothing more than the release
of pure mechanical energy. The impacting body is made of inert matter whose
sole source of energy is its velocity. This energy must be reallocated as
this body impacts another such as the moon. The majority will be released as
heat and light. The distribution of this energy will roughly follow the
curve of energy distribution for a 'black body'. This is a relatively low
energy impact so most of it will be invisible heat energy and some will be
released as visible light. The remainder of the energy will be used to move
other rocks and dust and lunar material that it has impacted.
