Here was my thinking on the 1 mm grain of sand: If
it struck bare rock, we might see a 'spark' as all of the energy would be
dissipated instantly. If it struck the soft dust similar to that underfoot in
Apollo 11 it might penetrate some distance before becoming energetic enough to
radiate. I agree with you that there would be a lot of ejecta but would the
radiant portion of the event be masked from detection?
