Thanks, Terry, for a very cogent answer to this thread which sprang up while so
many of us were in Tallahassee this weekend!
As Terry indicates, there is a long period of "dark fall" for all but the most
MASSIVE meteoroids: this is the period during which they have been slowed by
atmospheric friction all the way from celestial velocities (10-72 km/s) down to
their terminal velocity in Earth's atmosphere (0.2 km/s or less!)

Having said all that, of course, I have to reveal that I often have the impulse
to "duck" myself when I see a really bright fireball near the zenith. :)
