Very bright fireballs appeared last Saturday evening at about 8:39 PM EST.
Just as we were closing up Seagrave Observatory at Skyscrapers in N.
Scituate, RI, (as clouds were rolling in) there were at least two very
bright flashes above the cloud cover...perhaps more. We guessed the
illumination was at least equal to first quarter moon on the ground. If the
clouds were not there it probably would have approached full moon
brilliance. The flashes appeared in an easterly direction at about 60
degrees up from the horizon (in the direction of Providence from N.
Scituate). As near as we can tell, they appeared to be travelling in an ESE
direction.

The last time I saw such a bright meteor burst was during the Leonid meteor
shower in New Mexico in Nov. 1998.

Did anyone else witness this event?
