RE: (meteorobs) Re: Observations Mar 11/12 + Flashes + bugs

Bob,
I would say that 40 years ago, all point meteors reported were point
meteors. I would estimate that 99% of all point meteors reported today are
satellite flashes. While moving satellites with short period flashes are
easily detactable, I have seen up to 4 minutes between flashes (that I have
been able to detect...after that time it is unlikely that a meteor observer
would see more than one flash. Actually, Bob, you may have one of the best
databases available. Any way to determine how many point meteors per
observing hour you have seen over the years? And how much effort do you put
into watching a single flash for a repeat in order to reject a satellite as
the cause?). Any serious investigation into point meteors must include
examining ALL satellites visible at that sky coordinates, local time, and
observing location. This ain't the pristine sky it was when we were kids
;-)

Mike,

It would be interesting to know if these flashes remained stationary or
if they moved. If they were stationary then I would agree with Rob that
they were geosynchronous satellites.

I have seen many flashes and in 99% of the cases there is a repeat flash
just a degree or two away 10 to 15 seconds later. This is quite normal
for many satellites.

Thanks for mentioning this interesting subject.

Clear Skies!
