There was some anticipation for a possible "unusual" Leonid display in 1966.  
The event is well-documented in the recently published book "The Heavens on 
Fire" by Mark Littmann.  I can only tell you that here in the New York 
Metropolitan area, The New York Times ran a major article on the day of the 
anticipated display . . . and the Hayden Planetarium (in cooperation with the 
NY Parks Department) sponsored a "Leonid Watch" in Central Park.  Over 10,000 
people turned out.  Unfortunately, the sky was overcast and nothing was seen!
