RE: (meteorobs) Newbie Question ???

It is most likely that you saw a tumbling rocket body or satellite. These
can often produce very quick flashes (tenths of a second) that can be quite
bright...while most are dimmer, I have seen some as bright as -2. Another
possibility is the Iridium satellites, which generally produce flares that
move some 5 or 10 degrees, and slowly get brighter, then dimmer over many
seconds. It also could have been 2 point meteors (heading directly toward
you) but considering the rarity of these events before satellites and
rockets became prevelent, the man-made option is much more likely. Even the
hundred of hour a year observer may only see one or two in that year...and
our orbits are light polluted my mankind's debris even those are suspect.

Subject: (meteorobs) Newbie Question ???

<<File: ATT00000.html>>
Greetings,

I have a question and I hope that someone will understand what I am
describing, I have been reading everyone's e-mail for a few months now
trying to learn meteor observations.

I personally enjoy the solar activity and deep sky observations but also
enjoy meteors, actually anything that's up there is interesting.

Anyway I think I have let you know by now that I am new to this part.

Last night while out searching deep sky objects. I caught something that
was different. To me anyway

At 9:50 PM (4:50 UT ?) I was looking west from where I was and I noticed 2
bright flashes about 3 seconds apart.

The flashes were between Pollux and Castor in the Gemini Constellation.

The flashes themselves were brighter that the two stars themselves probably
1 time brighter.

If anyone could enlighten me on this It would be appreciated.

This really gets your blood flowing seeing something different.

Thanks for your help.
