PRELIMINARY ETA AQUARID REPORT - ASV METEOR SECTION
This report was generated using results from ASV Meteor Section Observers.
Observations of the maximum were mainly made at the Leon Mow Dark Sky Site
at Heathcote. Pre maximum observations were made from Tidal River at
Wilson's Promontory. A full report on hours of observing and observers
names will be made available at a later date, once all the reports have
been received and processed.
Thank you to all observers who have sent in their observations to date.
Anyone who has observations of the Eta Aquarids from this year, could they
please forward them to myself at the e-mail address below or post them to
71 Willora Crescent, Cranbourne Vic 3977.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
ZHRS:
1/2 May 16.00 to 19.00 - Average ZHR = 22 (+/- 5)
2/3 May 16.00 to 19.00 - Average ZHR = 27 (+/- 5)
3/4 May No Observations
4/5 May No Observations
5/6 May 16.00 to 20.00 - Average ZHR = 49 (+/- 5)
6/7 May 16.00 to 20.00 -Average ZHR = 58 (+/- 4)
The above ZHRs were generated using a sample size of approximately 400
meteors. The rates fit the approximate maximum of the Eta Aquarids. The
highest ZHR came on the night after the predicted maximum.
-----------------------------------------------------
TRAINS:
-2 with Trains = 100%
-1 with Trains = 100%
0 with Trains = 95%
+1 with Trains = 92.5%
+2 with Trains = 75.4%
+3 with Trains = 13.6%
+4 with Trains = 0%
+5 with Trains = 0%
Trains (Overall) = 55 %
Nearly 100% of meteors of +2 or brighter possessed trains. At magnitude +3
or lower, the incidence of trains were very low. The overall percentage of
trains for this years display averaged over 50% which is high for even the
Eta Aquarids.
-----------------------------------------------------
MAGNITUDE:
Average Magnitude Pre Maximum = +1.80
Average Magnitude Maximum = +2.35
Average Magnitude Overall = +2.12
An analysis of the average magnitude of Eta Aquarids meteors this year
shows a marked brightening of meteors seen on the nights leading up to the
maximum. Meteors seen on or after the night of the maximum were of a lower
than average magnitude for this years display.
-----------------------------------------------------
COLOURS:
White = 94%
Yellow = 5.6%
Green = 0.4%
Colours in meteors of this years Eta Aquarid meteors were dominantly white,
with a few yellow meteors only. One green Eta Aquarid was seen.
