(meteorobs) Observation June 4/5 2000
Last Sunday (June 4/5), I finally found some clear skies. I was out
meteor observing at Casselman for over 3 hours. This time, it was a
pleasure to have the company of some other observers who were busy
all evening with telescopes. Temperature was unusually cool at only
6C, but the wind was calm. The dew got so bad that my plotting charts
were dripping wet (Trying to plot meteors on such soggy paper was a
challenge!). The sky was just a bit hazy near the horizons at the
beginning, but it gradually got better until my limit mag reached
6.4. I faced south to concentrate mainly on the ecliptical source,
but I was also plotting for any possible Chi or Omega Scorpids, Tau
Herculids and before dawn for the elusive Arietids.
The first hour produced just 5 meteors, without any shower member.
The second hour produced a couple of Ecliptids and only 2 sporadics.
The third hour finally got interesting as it surged to 12 meteors (11
sporadics including 2 from the apex source)! The ecliptical source in
the Sagittarius/Scorpius area was the main shower activity for the
night. Nothing was seen from the daytime Arietids.
There was a couple of highlights...
The first one (at 5:38 UT) was a swift magn 0 trained sporadic coming
out from the apex. The second event (at 7:06 UT) was two sporadics in
the east that appeared only one second apart. Enjoyable night!
