When i was faced with the same predicament,the first thing i did was search 
my home for a suitable alternative,and i came across the rear LED light 
which clips on to my bike...Ive been using it ever since!
Its just bright enough i find,much lighter than most torches and convenient 
to use since it can easily be clipped to a jacket leaving two hands free to 
do other things,and the best thing is the batteries never seem to run out!!
