You are NOT trying to get "extra signal". In
fact you get less signal if the signal was linearly polarised. A yagi in the
correct plane would give the most signal. What you should be trying to do is
make sure than no matter what  the plane of polarisation is, that you get a
constant reading. You want your peaks and troughs in the data to be real
variations in signal strength, not a measure of the polarisation
characteristics of the antennae or other chance polarisation effects.
