(meteorobs) Observations Leonids 1999
The amateurs of astronomy of city Ulianovsk have conducted observations
meteoric shower Leonid in night with 17 on November 18 1999 (48d10mE,
+52d42mN). Lm = 5.9 (in zenith). The observations prolonged with
interruptions from 22:20 UT to 2:08 UT. Around 23:00 and 23:30 UT the
observations were hindered by a cloudiness. Around 23:45 UT the observations
were hindered by a mist.
Till 1:09 UT three observers (sited on a chair) surveyed the sky above SEE
by horizon, at the altitude by 45 degrees. There was a frosty weather
(temperature of air was a minus 15 C) and the observers were on duty on
queue, for 20 minutes everyone. From 0:53 UT two observers, from 1:05 UT -
three observers participate in observations.
From 1:13 UT of meteors became much and observers transfer on the simple
score. From now on all three observers participat in observations, covered
the sky above E and SE by horizon, with centre of field of view at the
altitude 35-40 degrees. The observations were written on the magnetic
recorder, but, unfortunately, when the observers transfer on the simple
score, is not possible define who what meteors saw.
The observers:
S - Sergey Shanov
T - Tanya Shanova
I - Ivan Purtov
The note:
1. For all time of observations four meteors not of inherings to shower
Leonid were remarked only.
2. The meteors shower Leonid occurred nonuniformly, and as though by gusts.
Leonids occurred by packs till 2-3 meteors, frequently there were chains of
meteors and meteors - twins. In a maxima, the packs of meteors were joined
with each other, yielding meteoric storm.
3. There were many bright meteors, but any of them did not exceed at
luminosity a planet Venus.
4. The brightest meteors seemed yellow and orange, more feeble - green.
Almost all meteors had very dense tracks.
5. On our observations the maximum was at 2:03 UT. A grandiose show!!! I
think, that the same amount of meteors could be seen by one observer under
more comfortable conditions.
6. The meteoric storm noticeably has weakened only by 2:50, to a start of
dawn.
