(meteorobs) Leonid talk to be featured at CSP10
Those of you who live in southwestern New England may already be aware of
this . . . but this coming Friday through Sunday is the weekend of the 10th
annual Connecticut Star Party. It is held near the town of Colebrook,
Connecticut (pop. ~800). This is up in far-northwest Connecticut (Litchfield
County) within the southern Berkshires -- and just a stone's throw to the
east of the highest point in Connecticut (Mt. Frissell/2,380 feet).
I have never been to CSP, but one of their members, Linda Marks, assures
me that the skies are very dark -- probably the darkest anywhere in the state
of Connecticut. I am told that usually the largest instrument brought to
this site is a 25" Dob owned by the Westport Astronomical Society (WAS).
In some ways, it sounds (to me) like the way Stellafane was about 30 or
40 years ago, as the total of campers and participants is usually no more
than 200-250.
There are of course, the usual swap tables and vendors as well as a
roster of guest speakers: Peter Ceravolo, who produced that fantastic video
of Comet Hyakutake back in 1996; Charles Bailyn of Yale, an
internationally-known expert on black holes; Jon Wallace, a radio astronomer
. . . and the featured afternoon talk is by some guy from Long Island named
Rao who will speak on the "Y2K Leonids: Now what?"
Best of all . . . the weather (from this vantage point) looks like it will be
great.
If you want more info, go to their web page at:

Maybe I'll see some of you
meteorobs folks up there!
