Re: (meteorobs) Two questions about Leonids 2000

Jure,
When determining the geometry of encounter of a dust trail, an iterative
procedure is used. Because of the effect of perturbations, no
analytic solution is possible. For sections of trails that are not
heavily perturbed, the intersection geometry is quite smooth; there are
no obvious "kinks". You will notice that in some years, David and I
give no data for the intersection geometry. In these cases a close
planetary encounter has disrupted the trail and the iterative
solution has failed (usually because the trail is no longer coherent
along this section).

Certainly older trails can produce activity, although storm activity is
unlikely. No study is yet so complete, or correct, that surprise
events should not be expected. Get out and observe! The models
cannot be improved without the derived ZHR's from visual observers.

Cheers, Rob
