Actually, to produce an evening fireball (I haven't seen any magnitude
estimates, so based on video I'mm assuming -8 to -10) it need not be such a
large piece of orbital debris. Certainly the long period of visibility
implies that it be something in earth's orbit, since a meteoric object
would have a minimum velocity of 11 kps in the atmosphere or 660 km in the
minute reported...difficult to keep in view that long from one point on the
earth (given normal horizons). But a rocket body travelling at a slower
speed would only cover ~400 km, and is likely to produce lots of pieces
that fall off.

If this is so, perhaps something went wrong. Seems kinda strange that even
the Russkies would allow a large piece of debris to deorbit over a
populated land mass, especially the US.
