Lew:
    I would suspect N2 (N+) nitrogen bands, 6100-6400 A and Si II around
6350 A as a contributing factor.  One of Jiri Borovicka's papers also states
that Leonid spectra are rich in atmospheric emmissions of O, N, and N+ at
the red end.  Perseids are probably similar.
