Re: (meteorobs) Starting Fires

We had a very good discussion about hot or cold meteorites back in Feb.
1999 when I posted an account of a "hot" meteorite fall in 1885 in Mexico
in three posts. I happen to have this old 1887 Century magazine that had
the story and thought the folks would enjoy my posting the eye-witness
account of a meteorite fall that almost hit a person. I wasn't prepared for
the adverse reaction to my posts, hot meteorites are not an option within
the profession and near professional meteor society. I, however, tend to
place more credence in the eye-witness reporting of the common man than
theories generated thousands of miles away and generations removed from
the accounts given. This puts me at odds with most of the old-timers on
meteorobs, who take an uncompromising stance. In general it is believed
that little or no heating of the core happens due to ablation, the removal of
the outter surface of meteors and meteorites from friction with the
atmosphere and if heating occurs, the entire meteorite cools during the
miles long fall to the surface. It's a good argument and for most meteorites
I believe it prevails, but in order to maintain this theory all reports of
"hot" falls for ordinary meteorites must be ignored, discounted and
minimized with a wink and a nod, but they keep coming so I feel that some
meteorites are hot when they hit the Earth even if most professionals do
not. The account is good reading and ALSO happens to say something about
sound but maybe not electrophonics but similar in sound.
