Re: (meteorobs) Tahiti event?

Hi all !

I've a friend living in Tahiti, he's amateur astronomer. He just sent
me an Email about this !
He was waked up about midnight by a big explosion. The windows of the
house and even the ground where shaked by the explosion. He saw
nothing because he was sleeping, but, from some witnesses, the big
bolid traveled throught the sky for a few seconds. A geophysical
laboratory recorded the explosion in the air (not directly on the
ground) but there was 3 big pieces of the "meteor" (?) finally on the
ground.
It seems that my friend was about only 5 km of the explosion center
and he says he was very afraid by the big boom when waking up ...

Happy new year and happy millenium !

Christophe, France.

Subject: (meteorobs) Tahiti event?

Dear All!

A few hours ago Russian mass-media reported the following info (I
translated
it electronically from Russian). Does anybody hear any details?

Sincerely,

Large meteorite fell in Tahiti - the overseas territory of France in
Pacific
Ocean. On 30 December 2000 01:12:22 ten eyewitnesses saw " white glow
and
practically all inhabitants of the adjacent settlements perceived the
vibration of walls and window frames in the houses, transfers ITAR-
TASS.
The detachments of the gendarmery of Tahiti began the searches for the
point
of impact in the meteorite. On the helicopters they will inspect the
hilly
shores Of vakhiriya lake in the center of island. The specialists of
local
geophysical laboratory registered strong blow; however, they consider
that
the fallen object could be not only meteorite, but also fragments of
artificial Earth satellite
