Dear Robert,

To avoid observing horrors, I would recommend you drive just 2 
hours east on I-10, past Indio, to the Joshua Tree exit, then 
proceed North into the park. Within a few miles there will be many 
excellent, dark, safe observing sites, with PAVED roads.
