RE: (meteorobs) Re: FIREBALLS people !!

as it is important for fireball reports to be examined for their value!

Hello Jim,

As per your request, here are some recent reports:

================= Attached Message =================
Now here are some of your eyewitness reports from
around the world:

by Sally Neuhaus <sneuhaus@txcyber.com>

I live outside of Somerville, Texas and last week on
my day off I had to go over to Brenham, Tx. to do some
shopping. Upon my return home, I was coming down Hwy.
36 and approaching the stoplight in Somerville when
what seemed to be almost right in front of me a huge
Meteor type object scooted across the sky. It lasted
what seemed like a minute or more. It was absolutely
the most beautiful site you can imagine. It was a
large bright white/silver light, round, solid looking,
with a blue light mixed in with the whiteish silver
light extending into a long tail. The blue was so
bright and such a beautiful color of blue. I waited
to see if anything would be on the news that evening
about it or in the newspaper, but alas, nothing. I
know I couldn't have been the only one to see this
beautiful object. But no media coverage. I don't
understand. The first thing that came to my mind was
like in the prophecy's about "blue star". I don't
quite know what else to say, other that it was a site
I will never forget. I also had the feeling this had
some special meaning to it although I am clueless as
to what at this point. I have a feeling of uneasiness
in these past few weeks as if something important is
about to happen and the feeling continues to get
stronger as the days go by.

>>>>>WAYNE>> If it lasted a minute or more, it probably wasn't a meteor!!
....... Even at minimum meteor speed (11kps and that's VERY rare or almost
impossible) unless it goes directly overhead, a minute is unrealistic.

Fireball Spotted In Christchurch
Peter Fowler (Staff Reporter )
30 Dec 2000 (10:12 )

A Christchurch man says a fireball seen by many people
in Canterbury yesterday was big and bright, and
appeared to hit the ground. Des Logan was driving back
from Akaroa with his son at about 5pm when he saw what
seemed to be a large light, which he said fell
vertically to the ground.

>>>WAYNE>>> This is a common perception of observers. "It landed right over
the hill" except that the guy 300 miles away says the same thing! One must
investigate all the reports to get a sense of what the real path was. The
person who rarely watches the sky always thinks that moving down in the sky
means it's heading toward the surface directly, unaware of the physics of
meteors, and the way that the human brain processes visual information. At
least it seems likely this was a fireball.

An astronomer at Mount John observatory in Canterbury
said several pilots also saw the fireball.

It was thought most likely to have been a meteor, and
it was not unusual for these to be bright enough to
show up during daylight hours. There have so far been
no reports of an impact.

Pilot treated to meteor light show

The pilot of a commercial airliner flying over the
West Coast this afternoon was treated to a 15 minute
light show as what appears to be a meteor crashed
through Earth's atmosphere.

>>>WAYNE>>> 15 minutes? Not a meteor! Unless the 15 minutes is the dust
trail time. See what I mean? Needs more investigation!

A number of people phoned police in Christchurch and
Greymouth as intense white and orange lights blazed
across the skies this afternoon [Dec. 29].

The lights were followed by a dust trail, which a
spokesman at the Mt John Observatory in Tekapo says is
typical of a meteorite.

 by "Bob" <rmc123@bellatlanticdot net>
Yonkers New York, I observed a flash of bluish white
light which filled my field of view from a living room
window. This did not appear to be lightening as I did
not observe a lightening bolt or did it appear to come
from any particular direction. This flash was
accompanied by a loud low roar which lasted approx.
10- 15 seconds (which I consider unusual). Other
conditions were heavy snow falling at the time,
approx. 2- 3 inches on the ground. Just reporting an
observation.
___________________

WAYNE>>>> This was undoubtedly lightning, as there were numerous reports of
lightning during this storm. It is not that unusual for lightning to occur
during rapidly developing snowstorms in this area of the northeast. See
Kocin and Uccellini's "Snowstorms Along the Northeastern Coast of the
United States: 1955 to 1985" pp 40-41, published by the AMS (as in American
Meteorological Society; not the American Meteor Society :->) where
lightning was reported in 10 of the 20 major storms examined.

All of these reinforce the fact that fireball reports are often inaccurate.
It takes considerable skill and effort to get at the facts, which requires
someone with knowledge of the physics of meteors and human visual
perception.
