(meteorobs) AKM Video Observations January 2001
Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - January 2001
======================================================
The new millenium started very successful for the video observers in the
AKM. Both the effective observing time and the number of recorded meteors could
be more than doubled compared to January 2000. In fact, we never managed to
accumulate more than 400 hours of observing time in a single month before!
This is mainly thanks to a stable high pressure system which presented central
europe almost a week of clear skies and sunshine at the middle of January.
Only the north-east of Germany was hampered by thick fog for several days.
The maximum of the Quadrantids fell into the European daytime hours. Still this
shower could be observed quite well in 2001. Already a few days later the
dry winter and spring period with only one meteor per hour on average started
for some of us. Personally I cannot complain, however: Especially the
morning hours presented still plenty of meteors for me. This may also in
part have been caused by the fact, that my camera was operated in January
often at better observing sites than my primary site in Aachen.
Andre Knoefel has become an active observer again. He provided many meteor
records without reporting any further software problems. This brings the
gravity center of our network even farther to the west of Germany. There is
also good news about the two new AKM video cameras. The current state of
affairs will be presented by Mirko Nitschke at the AKM meeting in March.
At the end I would like to give some optimistic outlook: Our network will
further grow in the near future. Rob McNaught, most of you well-known as the
co-author of the often-cited Leonid predictions, is preparing a camera station
down under in Australia. If his camera is operating, he might be able to
collect as much data as all of us together thanks to better weather and skies.
In addition his observations will cover the southern sky, which is still
largely unknown from the point of view of meteor observation. We are eagerly
awaiting your data, Rob!
