The main aspect of dark adaptation is in chemical changes in the retina, so
blocking light from one eye does have an effect.  Pupil expansion is a
lesser, but more immediate effect and is common to both eyes.  Try looking
in a mirror in a dimly lit room (but bright enough to clearly see your pupil)
and holding a, not too bright, torch up to one eye. You will see the pupil of
the other eye contract.
