(meteorobs) A 'Local' Meteor Storm in 1178? ("Eyewitness Impact Debunked")

Members of 'meteorobs' may wish to read the following story at the Sky
Publishing ("Sky & Telescope") Web site:

    http://www.skypub.com/news/news.shtml#giordanobruno

It cites U Arizona astronomer Paul Withers as saying that any impact
on the moon large enough to create a 22 km crater (such as the crater
"Giordano Bruno") would HAVE to have showered earth with what Withers
calls "a meteor storm... lasting for a week". And from his description
as quoted, it sounds like he does in fact mean truly a meteor storm...

Is anyone familiar with the original paper (April Meteoritics), or at
all with Dr. Withers or his work? Just curious to hear comments.

Clear skies,
Lew Gramer
