(meteorobs) Meteor Activity Outlook for April 6-12, 2001

Due to the full moon on Saturday there will be very little meteor
activity to be seen this week. Now is the time to rest and to prepare
for the Lyrids which will peak on April 22. The estimated total hourly
rates for evening observers this week should be near 1 for those located
in the Northern Hemisphere and 2 for those located in the Southern
Hemisphere. For morning observers the estimated total hourly rates would
be near 3 for the Northern Hemisphere and 5 for those located in the
Southern Hemisphere. Rates are reduced due to moonlight. These morning
rates assume that you are watching from rural areas away from sources of
light pollution except for the moon. The actual rates will also depend
on factors such as personal light and motion perception, local weather
conditions, alertness and experience in watching for meteor activity.
The positions listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning
April 7/8. The positions do not change greatly day to day so these
positions may be used during this entire period.

Antihelion (Virginids) 14:08 (212) -12
Northern Apex 19:08 (287) -07
Southern Apex 19:08 (287) -37
Delta Pavonids 21:36 (324) -65

The detailed descriptions of each shower will return next week as the
moon approaches its last quarter phase and won't be such a nuisance to
observers.

Clear Skies!
