(meteorobs) Observation April 18/19 2001
Hi everyone,
(Lyrids maximum over Ottawa was washed-out this year, but I have a
couple of reports for the previous nights)...
I finally made it out for a meteor session! This is my first
recording session since the Leonids of last November, so it's been
fairly long. Poor weather over eastern Ontario has not helped in past
months. It was nice to be get back to it again. On Wednesday April
18, I headed out to Casselman to check out early Lyrids, among other
minor showers also active. There were some early patchy clouds and
haze interfering a bit with transparency. I suspect maybe the dust
cloud high in the upper atmosphere was a bit part to blame.
Temperature was quite cool at -2C, with a slight breeze. I had my
"coffin" setup.
In two and a half hours, I recorded 19 meteors of which only two were
Lyrids. The Librids (IMO Sagittarids or anthelion radiant) were also
active. I have some of them plotted. Meteors mostly on the faint
side. I fumbled a lot that night with flashlights and recorders
constantly falling to the ground, and I had to get out of my warn
sleeping bag to retrieve them... obviously it had been a long time
since my last meteor session.
There was lots of neat satellites that night! An enjoyable session!
