(meteorobs) Observation April 19/20 2001

The following night (Thursday April 19/20), conditions were much
better with excellent transparency at the Casselman site. My limiting
magnitude reached 6.4. I settled for an hour and a half of meteor
observing around midnight.

What stole the show during the first hour was not the Lyrids, but an
unexpected burst or "hiccup" of Librids (aka IMO Sagittarids or
anthelions)! I'm used to seeing perhaps one or two members per hour
from this source, especially with the low radiant. You can imagine I
was quite surprised to find out that my first hour had seven! I got
some of them plotted. The following half hour observing was much
quieter with nothing but one sporadic.

It's too bad I had to cut my session short because of work early the
next morning. I was quite curious to find out what would have
happened later at night.

The nicest meteor was a yellow-orange colored magn 0 Lyrid that
flashed in Hercules. Also, one of the Librids travelled 20 degrees on
a fairly slow path.
