(meteorobs) Meteor Activity Outlook for May 4-10, 2001

The moon is full on Monday May 7. Even though the Eta Aquarids peak this
weekend this upcoming week will be the worst time to try to see meteor
activity due to the brilliant moon. Some Eta Aquarid activity may
be seen during the last hour before dawn when the moon lies low in the
southwest. The estimated total hourly rates for evening observers this
week should be near 1 for both Northern Hemisphere and Southern
Hemisphere observers. For morning observers the estimated total hourly
rates would be near 5 for the Northern Hemisphere and 7 for those
located in the Southern Hemisphere. These rates assume that you are
watching from rural areas away from all sources of light pollution
except for the moon. The actual rates will also depend on factors such
as personal light and motion perception, local weather conditions,
alertness and experience in watching for meteor activity. The positions
listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning May 5/6. The
positions do not change greatly day to day so these positions may be
used during this entire period. The detailed descriptions of each active
radiant will return next week when conditions are a bit more favorable.

Antihelion 16:00 (240) -20
Beta Corona Australids 18:04 (271) -41
Northern Apex 21:00 (315) -01
Southern Apex 21:00 (315) -31
Eta Aquarids 22:32 (338) -01

Clear Skies!
