(meteorobs) ETA Aquarids observations May 5
I did a repeat of yesterday mornings schedule, waking up an hour
before dawn and trying to catch the near-peak night of the ETA. I
realized that the moon would be a bigger factor this time, not
setting until just shortly before dawn begins. So I divide my 1hr Teff
into 2 equal segments expecting a change in LM as the moon
sets. The LM in first half hour was 5.0 and I had to look straight up
at the zenith to get the darkest sky. Saw only 2 ETA. However, in
the 2nd half hour, when the moon was setting a nasty cloud patch
came over! What bad luck! The net effect was a reduction in LM to
4.8 as well as big F factors. Murphy at work again. Nevertheless
saw 3 ETA.
So, in summary I saw 5 ETA in that hour compared to 6 yesterday.
Given the poorer conditions today, the calculated ZHR=58.6 which
surpassed yesterdays value of 41.0
The results seem consistent with the expected behavior of ETA
approaching their peak May 5 at 23:00. But, the observations today
were truly a struggle. Luckily a weekend at the beach is coming
up...
