                        PURPOSE OF THE COURSE/WORKSHOP

The main objectives of the Workshop are to learn what we know now and what
and how we can learn more about the physical and chemical properties of
potential earth impactors; namely, asteroids and comets, with the ultimate
aim of providing the best possible data for mitigation procedures. A major
concern to the world is the potential devastation produced by impacts of
cosmic objects from space. For this reason we consider as a subtitle for the
school: 'KNOW YOUR ENEMY'. The lectures will be devoted to consideration of
all possible means - from theoretical to experimental to remote
observational to space observational, and space in situ measurements - for
obtaining the internal structure and composition of asteroids and comets.
The course will include a series of workshops that will summarize and
supplement the lectures and provide suggestions for further studies in the
application of all techniques that can be used to provide a database on
cosmic object properties. A significant consequence of the course will be
its application to knowledge of the formation of the Solar System. This
course, as was the case for all the previous courses in the Space Chemistry
School, is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together experts with a wide
variety of chemical, physical, and technical backgrounds in theory,
laboratory astrophysics, ground-based observations, and space-based
observations as well as applications.

OCTOBER 9-12, 2001, FRANCE: CERES 2001 WORKSHOP

 From C Blanco <CBLANCO@alpha4.ct.astrodot it>

Astrometry and Physics of Minor Planets from Observational Networks

to be held in Paris, France on October 9-12 , 2001

A workshop dedicated to the bicentenary of the discovery of Ceres by Piazzi
is proposed to be held in October 2001 in Paris, France, organized by the
Institut de mecanique celeste/ Observatoire de Paris.

This workshop plans to gather professional and amateur astronomers
interested in asteroids and more generally in small bodies of the solar
system, modeling motions, studying physical properties of these objects and
observing through networks. The goal of this workshop is also to
review the techniques used at present time for the observations of
asteroids. The proposed topics of the workshop are:

    * Astrometric observations of the asteroids: towards a better accuracy

    * Prediction and observation of stellar occultations by asteroids:
increasing the efficiency
     of the observers networks

    * Photometric observations of asteroids: shape and spin axis
determination

    * Satellites of asteroids, binary asteroids: towards the detection of new
systems

    * Observation of other Solar System small bodies

    * Networks of observers: what to expect from new technologies?

More information at: http://www.bdl.fr/sympo/ceres2001.html

The registration fee is: 600 French Francs (91.60 Euros) and includes
lunches, coffee breaks and the proceedings of the workshop

Some partial financial supports will be available. If you need some, please,
send a demand with your registration form.

OCTOBER 23-26, 2001, JAPAN: INTERNATIONAL NEO WORKSHOP

 From Syuzo Isobe <isobesz@cc.nao.ac.jp>

The 2nd Circular and request for registration.

                 An International Workshop
                           on
                Collaboration and Coordination
Among NEO Observers and Orbital Computers

                  Kurashiki City Art Museum
                  Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan

                   October 23 to 26, 2001

The Japan Spaceguard Association would like to hold a workshop from October
23 through 26, 2001, at the Kurashiki City Art Museum (near the Bisei
Spaceguard Center). Following the workshop, we will inaugurate the Bisei
Spaceguard Center on October 27.

Purpose of the Workshop:

In these years NEO matters have been discussed at different occasions and
organizations. Number of NEO observers and orbital computers has been
increasing and they have been producing excelent results. However, it seems
that there were not much discussions on collaboration and coordination
among them and some critical debates between those teams were brought.
Therefore, the SOC intends to make this workshop to solve the problems or at
least to start to its solution. Program of this workshop will be arranged
with some introductory reports by NEO observers and orbital computers and
set aside many hours for discussions.

SOC members: Syuzo Isobe (Co-Chair), Donald K. Yoemans (Co-Chair),
Tom Morgan, Bob McMillan, Ted Bowell, Andrea Carusi,
Brian Marsden, Richard Binzel, Karri Muinonen, and
