(meteorobs) Meteors from Comet SW-3 tonight? On the Moon?
The message below was sent out on the LIADA Latin
American amateur astronomers e-list. I haven't translated the
Spanish carefully, but it sounds like there could be significant
meteor activity tonight from Comet SW-3 (which split earlier
this year and which is a 2006 flyby target of the CONTOUR
mission). And the Moon is near 1st quarter. The coordinates
given in the message are only about 30 deg. from those of the
52% sunlit Moon, at about R.A. 165 deg., Dec. +12 deg.
this evening. So if that's the radiant (it sounds about right
for SW-3), there won't be very many lunar meteors, but
there could be some close to the dark edge of the Moon.

Asunto: Cortina de polvo del cometa SW-3
Apreciados compañeros,
Esta noche (29-30 de mayo) existe una alerta observacional. Los cálculos
numéricos realizados por Hartwig Luthen apuntan a que esta noche la Tierra
pasará a sólo 0.0026 U.A. de la cortina de polvo dejada por el cometa
Schwassmann-Wachmann 3. Eso significa que a lo largo de la noche podrían
observarse meteoros procedentes de este cometa.
La órbita del cometa y su geometría induce a que tales meteoros fuesen
lentos (Vgeoc.=17Km/s) y procediesen de AR=212° y Delta= +28° (Boyero).
Vamos a establecer un par de estaciones fotográficas entre Barcelona,
Valencia y Castellón (de 2h a 5h TU) a las que os invitamos a apuntaros.
Rainer Arlt nos ha pedido que cualquier observación sea remitida (incluido
si fuesen negativas) lo más urgentemente posible en el formato estandar de
IMO.
