(meteorobs) June 12, 2001 Meteor Observations From California

I was able to watch for only two hours this morning. I drove to the
mountains to get above the marine layer. I did not break through the
clouds until reaching the 1000 meter level. Despite the bright moon the
Milky Way was impressive overhead. There were some cirrus along the
north and western horizons. Unfortunately these clouds moved in during
the second hour and limited my session to only 1 hour. I still managed
to see 8 meteors, 2 were Antihelion (Sagittarids), 2 were June Lyrids, 1
Xi Draconid, and 3 sporadics. There were no exceptionally bright meteors
seen. The most impressive meteor was a very swift 3rd magnitude sporadic
that shot overhead from the east.

I plan to be out tonight if the weather cooperates. The high clouds are
now gone but the marine layer (stratocumulus clouds) is thickening and
may reach the summit of the mountain which would force me to stay home.

The first column gives the period watched stated in Universal Time (UT)
which is PST + 7 hours. The second column gives the percent of that
particular hour actually spent observing the sky. Time was lost for
plotting and data entry tonight. The third column gives the average
limiting magnitude estimated during each period. The last several
columns list the activity seen during each period. I was facing north at
an altitude of 60 degrees during the entire session. No breaks were
taken. JLY = June Lyrids, XDR = Xi Draconids, ANT/SAG = Sagittarids
(Antihelion Radiant) and SPO = Sporadics (random activity).
