Hello,
Rather than sending a report directly to the IMO, I would kindly ask that
for reporting fireballs that have occurred over the United States, that you
instead make your report to the American Meteor Society. Our report form
is located at:
http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball/report.html
This is what we will do with a report that we receive:
(1) A synopsis of the report will appear in the AMS Fireball Sightings Log
(minus contact information), located
at: http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball/fireball_log.html
(2) For significant events over the U.S., we may conduct our own
investigation of the event and make reports about it to the general public.
(3) A copy of the report will be forwarded to the International Meteor
Organization's (IMO) Fireball Data Center (FIDAC).
(4) A copy of the report will be sent to the Canadian Meteorite and
Impacts Advisory Committee (MIAC) for events occurring over Canada or a
bordering U.S. state.
(5) We will notify potentially interested members of the Meteoritical
Society about significant fireballs occurring over their regions, in the
likelihood that they may wish to follow up on the sighting for their own
scientific purposes. Copies of relevant reports may be sent to these
scientists.
Note that a copy of the report will still go to the IMO (and MIAC, as
applicable), such that you DO NOT have to fill out separate reports for
those organizations. We have attempted to share information with as many
other potentially interested organizations as possible, and make the
process as "one stop" as we can for the fireball witness.
Best regards,
Jim
