(meteorobs) Recent Daylight Fireball Reports Involve Two Events

July 26, 2001

Greetings Meteor Enthusiasts!

Although it may already seem apparent to many of you
meteorobs readers, I would still like to clarify a
vital point concerning the famous daylight fireball
seen over much of the East Coast. That fantastic
fireball and the daylight fireball posted on meteorobs
by Ed Cannon are most certainly TWO separate events.
Ed Cannon's report (which was sent to him by a person
from Staten Island, NY) was seen at about 11:10 a.m.,
on Sunday the 22nd while the one that made the big
news was sighted on Monday the 23rd, at around 6:18
p.m. EDT. Absolutely incredible! Just imagine: two
daylight fireballs spotted in roughly the same area in
about 31 hrs. 8 min. apart!

Nevertheless, this also means that meteor enthusiasts
and/or meteorite hunters who wish to calculate the
fall area of the July 23 fireball have better be
careful not to confuse observer reports with the wrong
daylight event.

I think this proves that something is up with all
these recent fireball sightings.

Long strewn fields!
