Thanks Elton,

The heat I was referring to was not internal but rather the superheated air surrounding the meteor due to velocities in excess of several km/sec at the point of impact. Secondarily, the molten material (thin superficial layer) which is ejected on impact would start collateral fires if combustable material is available.
