Re: (meteorobs) last on flaming meteors

Tom,

The real problem about the controversy about hot or cold meteorites has
to do with what has been accepted as correct. Hot meteorite reports have
been taught as amateur/uneducated reporting which leads to a barrier of
accepting hot meteorite reports, so they are discounted out of hand because
they are thought by the professionals as the realm of the uneducated public.

I have pointed out from time to time that an iron meteorite is heated by
solar radiation prior to falling to Earth, is heated prior to the start of
ablation by the thin outer atmosphere, perhaps to red heat, doesn't heat
during ablation, but again is heated during supersonic flight prior to free
fall. I believe that combinations of composition of the meteorite, size,
flight time and angle of fall can end in a frosty or glowing meteorite as all
have been reported over the years by people who have found them moments
after hitting Earth. The majority of meteorobs members don't seem to
agree with me, we have touched on the subject a few times in the past.
