(meteorobs) NASA Science News: "Meteorites Don't Pop Corn"

For those who may still be struggling with the question of burning
meteorites, following is a very fine Web page on that subject from
'meteorobs' subscriber Dr. Tony Phillips. Great writing, Tony, and
some wonderful quotes from Don Yeomans and Bill Cooke.

Also featured is Jim Richardson's excellent geographic map of the
fireball sightings collected (directly, and through other sources
like 'meteorobs') by the AMS. Very nice work, Jim. It's fortunate
for us all that you had time off from classes this Summer!

PS: One small suggestion: A brief note on the other organizations
and fora which are assisting in the collection of witness reports,
would be a nice addition to the story, and to the AMS site.

Clear skies,
Lew Gramer

NASA Science News for July 27, 2001

A fireball that dazzled Americans on July 23rd was a piece of a comet or
an asteroid that exploded in the air like 3000 tons of TNT. Contrary to
reports, however, it probably didn't scorch any cornfields. Small
meteorites that reach the ground are usually cold, not hot. This story
explains why.
