(meteorobs) Meteor Activity Outlook for Aug. 3-9, 2001

With a full moon occurring on Friday August 3rd this entire period will
be saturated with bright moonlight. The only escape will occur in the
evening sky late in the period when the first few hours after the end of
evening twilight will become moon free . Unfortunately this time
provides the lowest meteor rates of the entire night. The morning sky
will be totally immersed in moonlight right up to the maximum of the
Perseid meteor shower (August 12). With the intense moonlight practical
meteor observing sessions are not possible this week. The positions
listed below (exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning August 4/5) are
provided should one see a bright meteor and wish to determine its
origin. The positions do not change greatly day to day so these
positions may be used during this entire period. The estimated total
hourly rates for evening observers this week should be near 1 for all
observers. For morning observers the estimated total hourly rates
should be 5-10 for the Northern Hemisphere and 5 for those located in
the Southern Hemisphere. These rates assume that you are watching under
transparent skies from rural areas away from all sources of man-made
light pollution . The actual rates will also depend on factors such as
personal light and motion perception, local weather conditions,
alertness and experience in watching for meteor activity. The detailed
individual shower descriptions will return next week when the moon is
much more cooperative.
