(meteorobs) Perseids from EMO Cortenay B.C.
We have had clear skies over Vancouver Island for the Perseids. The
Sandia All-sky camera has been running but I have not checked all the tapes
yet. I had hoped to set up a spectrograph last night but my good old friend
MURPHY struck again. Camera problems so I shut down and went to bed! Will
try again tonight if my neighbours and critters cooperate. Some of these
folks tend to leave sundeck and entrance lights on all night. I guess they
like high electricity bills! Others have installed high intensity security
lights that turn on when a cat or dog walks across their backyards. Very
convenient for us astronomers! I guess most don't associate the sight of a
domed observatory with the requirement of dark skies, even after they are
politely TOLD what the purpose is. A new development went in behind my
place along with the associated light polluting lighting. I went to
Cityhall when they were installing the street lights and asked them to use
sharp cutoff fixtures. They said it was the developers responsibility and
referred me to them. I talked to the site engineer and he seemed to agree
with my request. A few months later I got a letter from the person that
controls the purse strings for the project and he said they meet City bylaws
so they will install standard lighting, light scattering cobraheads, of
course. Some what of a Catch-22. Oh well, I can always take up stamp
collecting!
