(meteorobs) Perseid max night...

Greetings all,

Just finished typing up my meteor report for August 11/12th, is under
separate posting.

Had a most enjoyable evening... me, my 9 year old niece, and my landlord's
2 kids... with parents for a while.. and up to 3 dogs at one point. The
<more than 3> mosquitoes held off till after midnight, when I was down to
solo observing.

We watched the International Space Station go over.. then the Shuttle..
then the ISS again... with many other satellites seen over the evening. I
had all the kids decked out with red flashlights and NAMN star maps, and
they were spread out all over the driveway in their sleeping bags, picking
out constellations!

For a Perseid max night, I was most delighted with... all the Kappa
Cygnids! Beautiful, slow meteors. Nicest meteor of the whole night was a
long slow yellow Kappa Cygnid... just beautiful. All the kids saw it too,
and were very impressed!

It was also nice to get a Pisces Austrinid meteor, and a Capricornid. Both
of these radiants were way out of my field of view. I made some notes on
my tape recorder regarding their position, ie. start points and end points,
and doublechecked their identity after the session, when I could trace them
back to my unseen horizons more carefully using my maps. Actually, I do
the same thing with satellites.. record details of their path, then check
the satellite website afterwards for their identity, based on their path
and time.

There were a lot of patches of cloud moving through, so I took breaks at
those times. I also ran camera, and hope to maybe have a couple meteors on
film.

It was a fun night with all the kids, and I think they enjoyed it as much
as I did!

Clear skies,
