Re: (meteorobs) August 21, 2001 Meteor Observations From California
Hello
I have never posted to the list but have read it for 9 or 10 months now and
have learned a lot. I observe casually from a suburban light polluted
location (my front yard - back has too many trees) and consider it a thrill
if I see any meteors at all.
I can't offer anything valuable about observing, but I can tell you about a
product that I stumbled across that really works. It's a mosquito repellent
device that's odorless and effective in about a 15 foot zone. It looks like
a large TV remote control unit; comes with a butane canister and some strips
that contain the active ingredient in mosquito coils. When you turn it on
and click the start button, the butane lights and heats a shielded aluminum
panel over which you have inserted (slid in) one of the strips, which in
turn starts to emit this ingredient and VOILA no mosquitoes.
I like it because I don't have to put anything on myself or clothes and
there's no smoke or odor.
It's called Thermacell, has a website
http://www.mosquitorepellent.com/
and I found one at a Walgreens.
It cost about $25 and each refill is about $5 or $6 depending where you buy
them. Refills last about 10 hours (though you will use up the three strips
in that time).
So two evenings or so of meteor observing can be had mosquito free for about
$5.
I hope this provides a measure of comfort to those of you plagued by the
little noisy itchy critters. Especially those of you who are attempting the
Zendo-meteor approach - nothing like a single squeely mosquito for
distraction - they're great at it!!!
I have no connection with Thermacell - just trying to repay the group for
all you've taught me.
Thanks and clear skies to all.

PS to Lew Gramer - sorry I didn't think to tell you about this before you
went to the Keys!!
