This night has performed better in past years. In the 1970's and 1980's I
would expect total hourly rates in the 40's, although 2001 conditions were
not the best. Some persistent haze and humidity limited the sky to LM 6.7.
The night's best was a white-blue -6m Perseid at 415 EDT (815 UT) with a
blue 5-second train. The train was very bright at the start but it wimped
out unusually fast for such a bright meteor. One peculiar meteor was a slow
orange +2m sporadic which was a moving 2-degree streak.

It was a typical hot Florida night with temperature in the mid-70's
F,saturation humidity, and plenty of bugs. Fanning mosquitoes off with a
piece of cardboard also served to cool me down a little plus keep my glasses
defogged. A mosquito coil reduces their numbers by about 2/3, then I have
to deal with the braver ones actively.

West Nile virus is spreading rapidly. It first came to Florida a few weeks
ago in the northern part, right where I went for a family reunion days
later. Next it appeared near Tampa. Now comes a report that a woman from
Sarasota visited the Keys (Marathon) last week and caught the virus there.
Birds are carrying it around. It won't take long for all areas to have it.
Mosquitoes are sluggish in colder weather but that is still a couple of
months away minimum.
