John,

I was on the See Sat list for about three years and while there's a
constant update on satellite re-entries by some of the members, they are
often hit and miss. Satellites come down sooner than expected or make it to
the equator again where the denser air over the equater slows them down
enough to come down pretty rapidly after that, so you have to monitor the
list and hope the few satellites that are scheduled for possible re-entry in
your area in a years time happens to fall where you can see it but it's all
very speculative for the most part.

One experianced member reported a satellite that was in the shadow of
the Earth but still visible because it was glowing hot, but it didn't come
down within his vision. That's one reason I've stuck to the hot (in more
than one meaning) side of the hot/cold meteorite debate. Some iron
meteorites could be heated through and through in a shallow entry prior to
ablation.
