(meteorobs) Observation Oct 9, 2001 UT

Hi Everyone,
Always optimistic, I went out to check for Draconids/Giacobinids. My
observing time was after the "most likely" maximum time period listed in the
IMO calendar. And, NO I did not see any GIA. Some details before I go on:

Date: Oct 9, 2001
Time: 0:29-1:49 UT
Site: Newburg MD USA (about 76.9W and 38.4N)
Lm: 5.4 mag
F=1.00
Results: 5 SPO: +2=3 and +3=2 One of the +2's was a point meteor on the
Cygnus side of Draco's "lozenge", but that is not the side the radiant is
on, according to IMO. This meteor was a second long.

The night was one of the clearest I've seen in southern Maryland in a long
time. The Milky Way was distinct for 160 degrees, only disappearing in the
most horizonward 10 degrees in the NE and SW.
The slow activity allowed me to be more aware of incidental experiences
that busier rates prohibit. Breeze-bourne scents of frightened skunk,
fireplace woodfires, and salt marshes dominated the night. There was also
an adrenaline-raising rifle shot (deer season?) that rang out and echoed
back and forth across the Potomac for about five seconds! I was surprized
to see frost on my sleeping bag when I got done viewing. It was -1C on an
early Fall night.
   Best wishes,
   Rich Taibi
