Sheilla,

     Your brother was treated to an electrophonic meteor, sounds that are 
generated near the observer from a form of electric generation and 
transmitted from the meteor and reproduced in something on or near the 
observer, or so Colin Keay writes. Do a search using kew words, 
Electrophonic + Colin Keay for his website. It's quite normal for less than 
all observers to hear an electrophonic meteor in the same area.
