(meteorobs) Leonids from Carson City



Greetings from Carson City,Nevada,
             The following sightings were made during the early morning hours here. Job requirements prevented me from doing further observations, but still what I saw was great, and I can only imagine what the whole Leonid shower was like. Thankfully, I have plenty of e-mails to help me get an idea of what I did miss!

11.17.01  04:38 - 05:50 PST(12:38 - 13:50UT)  

Location: Carson City, Nv  39deg 11min N   119deg 45min W   elev: 1433m(4700ft)

Bortle scale: 5

Teff: 1 hr  12min

Breaks: 0

Total meteors sighted: 11(all Leonids)

Magnitude Dist:  -3  -2  -1   0   1   2   3   4   5   6
                         0   0   0   1   1   2   2   4   1   0

Color Dist: 8 - white   2 - blue/white   1 - yellow

Notes:  2 meteors presented persistant, translucent trains lasting 1 to 2 seconds.
           Both meteors flared. Both were magnitude +4. The meteors sighted were traveling in different directions at random on this night


11.17.01    19:45PST(03:45UT)

Location:  Washoe Valley, Nv.  39deg 16min N   119deg 47min W  elev:1542m(5060ft)

      I sightedighted one SPO while driving to work. Magnitide -2 to -3.  10 deg. train. Travel distance:  15deg. Travel Direction: W to NW  Blue/white color. Small flare.


11.18.01    05:13 - 06:10PST(13:13 - 14:10UT)

Location: Carson City, Nv  39deg 11min N   119deg  45min W elev: 1433m(4700ft)

Bortle scale: 6

Teff: 54min

Breaks: 1 (3 minutes to view an Iridium flare)

Total Meteors sighted: 23   (LEO - 22    ORI(?) 1)

Notes:   5 meteors presented persistant translucent trains.The longest lasting train was about 3 seconds. A magnitude -2 meteor sighted at 05:25PST(13:25UT) presented a very large flare with debris( a star burst effect).
             The meteors on this night were first sighted to the north side of Leo, and as viewing progressed, the sightings began to shift to the NW side of Leo, then to the west side of Leo, and the last two sighted at 05:58PST and 06:02PST respectively, were sighted from the SW side of Leo.
             The Orionid was a very faint meteor that originated from the area of Orion's Belt, thus I called it an Orionid.
