They would still be at least 20 miles away, if they were glowing, so
probably the difference in altitude probably doesn't mean much. But,
maybe atmospheric conditions have some effect, I don't know. I once
was with a group of about 15 people when a bright fireball occurred. One
woman in the group said that she heard a "hissing", but no one else,
including me, did. It's a mystery, although there are a couple theories
floating around.
