Subject: [IMO-News] Grazing Leonid from Hawaii; Images from Kitt Peak

Hi all -

The first Leonid I saw last night was a beautiful grazing LEO that occured
about 1012 UTC. -2 with a long train, it emerged from behind the trees in the
east, and disappeared behind mountains to the SSW, as seen from Dillingham
Field, on O'ahu. This morning I talked to a friend on the Big Island who saw
it go horizon to horizon from his vantage point. Armed with that knowledge, I
found an amazing image of it from an all-sky camera on Mauna Kea:

Considering that from my vantage point to my friends' on the Big Island is
about 200 nautical miles (320 km), and it appeared on his eastern horizon and
disappeared west of my position, the total path of this meteor must have been
well over 500 km.

A nice Leonid can be seen on this later image:

Another bright Leonid can be seen northwest of Regulus on an all-sky image
from Kitt Peak:

Another one can be seen on W of Capella on this Kitt Peak image:
