Subject: Vermont Leonids......(wow)

Hi all -

Observing Report (copy from written document of earlier today)

Near Andover, Vermont (southern VT)
Observing from 3:45AM to 5:15AM local
4th mag stars visible at 45deg; 5.5/6 at Zenith.
Naked eye for Leonids, 14x70 Fujinon's for recreational use; aging, but
trusty lawn chair, water, torn up down jacket, blanket, 'Seasonal Star
Charts' (no time to use it...too busy watching 'bugs hit the windshield').

22deg. F., dry; dew not a factor; earlier upper level haze retreated; very
clear, slight halo around Jupiter.

Primary direction of view was southeast towards radian. Ordinarily
observer looks 90deg to radian, but as straight-on observing was a
relatively different experience, thought to try it. Rewarding. Still able
to capture considerable counts from peripheral view, though likely missed
dimmer meteors there.

Meteor counts varied over observing period from between 2 to 3 per minute,
to as many as 4 per second in brief clusters. Ave estimated count from
exactly 4 to 5 AM, ranged 12 to 16 per minute, in 2 to -2 mag. range. Very
low count in range dimmer than 2nd mag. Brightness was consistent to this
observer. 8 sporadics in same period. Some noticeable groupings of as many
as 12 to 14 in less than ten seconds, then relative quiet for a minute or
less. This was a pronounced pattern.

Not many lengthy trains, typical for radiant observing experience I
suspect. Longest observed timed at 10 seconds. Most lasted 2 to 3 seconds.

And next year is supposed to be better? Only concern next year is, from my
calendar, a near-90% Moon.

Claudio
